The Mary Rose's Missing Hull Leaves Two Accounts of Her Sinking Apart

The Mary Rose is missing the stretch of hull that could have tested one explanation for her sinking. Much of the ship can be studied, but the proposed place of a French hit cannot. That is an awkward starting point for a famous wreck: the visible timbers seem to promise an answer precisely where the material needed to check it has disappeared. A survivor's account and a battle picture take us toward that missing side by different routes, and neither can put it back.
The ship sank in the Solent on 19 July 1545. The Mary Rose Trust describes a Flemish survivor's report, relayed through Van der Delft five days later, in which wind, heeling and water entering open lower gunports follow firing. That is an account of an observed sequence, not a modern reconstruction of every force acting on the vessel. Its importance lies in its proximity to the event; its incompleteness lies in how much of the ship's condition remains outside the words passed on.
Royal Museums Greenwich gives the same date for the loss, but says the ship sank before firing and describes overloading. Its account also says that the exact reason for capsizing is uncertain. The contrast is not a contest that one surviving sentence can decide. It marks two different reconstructions of a short and crowded moment: one places firing before the vessel took water, while the other removes firing from that immediate sequence. Both leave the cause open rather than supplying a final explanation.
19 July 1545: The Mary Rose Goes Down in the Solent
The familiar question, why she sank, contains several smaller questions that need not have the same answer. What made the vessel lean is one; how water entered is another; why recovery became impossible is a third. A witness might see one part clearly without seeing the others. This distinction changes the way the gunports should be read. Naming an opening through which water entered does not necessarily identify the first disturbance, and it certainly does not settle every contributing condition aboard the vessel.
The Trust does not choose a final cause from weather, loading, design, human error or French gunfire. It rejects treating the ports as demonstrably too low and describes gun-weight calculations within a safe limit. These are different tests. A calculation about gun weight cannot by itself resolve a disputed movement during battle; a disputed movement cannot establish that a design was inherently unsafe. Treating the two as interchangeable creates an apparent contradiction before we have even established that the claims concern the same thing.
The Trust gives the ship's age as thirty-four and notes work in 1536. That long career is a useful obstacle to the maiden-voyage story, but a poor substitute for reconstructing the final day. Earlier survival shows that the ship had floated and sailed under earlier conditions. It does not prove that every combination of loading, wind, movement and open ports was safe. Conversely, a later loss cannot establish that those earlier voyages were secretly evidence of an inevitable failure waiting to happen.
The differing accounts make material survival relevant without allowing it to answer more than it can. Neither comparison supplies evidence about the Mary Rose. Each instead marks the distance between an object’s survival and a complete account of its past.
There is a temptation to make the familiar account more complete each time it is repeated. An observation becomes an explanation; an explanation acquires a culprit; eventually every missing connection sounds as though someone witnessed it. The Mary Rose does not need those additions. The letter already supplies a specific sequence worth examining. To keep its value, we have to resist decorating it with an exact turn, a measured gust or an officer's motive that the account before us does not establish.
Van der Delft's 24 July Letter and the Lower Gunports
Five days separate the sinking from Van der Delft's dated letter. That short interval makes the report different from a legend first recorded centuries afterward, but it does not remove the intermediary. The useful distinction is not simply old versus new. It is whether a sentence reports what the survivor said, what the letter writer concluded, or what a later historian assembled around it. Those voices can fit within one modern paragraph so smoothly that their different vantage points disappear unless we deliberately separate them.
A reported order of events deserves neither automatic belief nor automatic dismissal. If a survivor describes water entering as a vessel heels, that statement can support a sequence without supplying the magnitude of the heel or the initial reason for it. Demanding that a witness answer every engineering question would discard information unfairly. Treating the statement as a complete engineering diagnosis would enlarge it unfairly. The letter matters because it contributes something particular, not because it can be made to do every kind of historical work.
There is also a difference between identifying a route for water and identifying an exclusive route. The report places the lower ports in the story, but the word exclusive is an additional claim. To establish that claim, we would need information ruling out other openings or damage at the relevant time. The distinction does not make a hidden breach likely. It simply prevents an account of something observed from becoming a claim that nothing else could have happened beyond the observer's view.
Royal Museums Greenwich makes the disagreement sharper by describing a sinking before firing, while the Trust relays a sequence after firing. We cannot quietly combine those clauses into one seamless scene. At minimum they ask for different chronologies. Their institutional standing does not eliminate the need to identify the underlying testimony, nor should their disagreement invite an invented compromise. A responsible narrative can retain the conflict and explain its consequences without deciding that a more confident sentence must be the more accurate one.
Even a plausible-looking object can mislead when detached from its find context. The Trust describes a granite ball in a shot locker and notes that comparable stone also occurs in England. A stone's possible geographical association and its presence aboard are not enough to turn it into an incoming projectile. The important question is what connects that particular object to that particular event. Without the connection, an object may remain genuine while the dramatic story attached to it outruns what its location can establish.
The disagreement about firing is not resolved by choosing the more vivid retelling. It instead exposes the need for another kind of evidence, one that might constrain position and movement without depending on the same remembered sequence. The Cowdray engraving seems to offer that change of viewpoint. It places the fleet in a landscape rather than inside a witness's sentence. But exchanging a letter for a picture does not exchange uncertainty for certainty; it changes the kind of uncertainty we must examine next.

The Cowdray Engraving Faces the Isle of Wight
Fontana’s reconstruction begins with a bird’s-eye battle image rather than with a witness standing on deck. The Cowdray engraving looks south from Portsmouth toward the Isle of Wight, and his study places recognizable landmarks beside GIS terrain, sea-depth information, and the archaeological position of the wreck. Those comparisons supply proposed fleet positions and a sinking scenario. They do not turn the engraving into direct observation. The scene is an image interpreted through location, distance, and surviving geography, with each step depending on the fit between depicted and mapped features.
In this reading, the protruding masts in the picture support a northerly heading for Mary Rose. Fontana also contrasts the Portsmouth battle scene with another Cowdray scene showing a storm; the Portsmouth picture has no obvious display of severe weather. Neither feature measures wind at the ship nor settles its sail configuration or manoeuvre. A mast shown in an engraving, like weather omitted from an engraving, enters the reconstruction as a visual premise. It does not independently tell us exactly what happened aboard during the final movement.
A mapped landmark can check where an artist has put a stable feature. A ship is a different kind of mark: it belongs to a moving event. Aligning a coastline therefore does not automatically validate every depicted movement nearby. Fontana's geographical approach is valuable because its proposed relationships can be discussed explicitly. Its persuasiveness should rest on those relationships, not on the impression that adding a digital map has converted every detail of an old image into measured information.
Within that scenario, damage low on the port side is proposed as a possibility. This moves beyond a visible scene toward a mechanism for loss, and it meets a material limit: erosion removed that side of the hull. There is no positive archaeological confirmation of the proposed hit. The missing timber neither verifies the damage nor supplies an alternative account by itself. It leaves the image-based proposal dependent on the arrangement Fontana derives from the engraving, mapped setting, and wreck position rather than on a surviving mark at the suggested location.
Consider what would happen if the picture were treated as a modern photograph. Every omission would begin to look like an absence in the world, and every depicted relationship would seem to have occurred at one instant. Those assumptions would make the story wonderfully easy to tell. They would also ask the engraving to guarantee things that its role as a composed historical image cannot guarantee. The proposed route toward a French hit is interesting enough without giving the picture an imaginary camera's authority.
The Missing Port-Side Hull and Fontana's Proposed Hit
The missing port side changes what a test could achieve. A surviving surface at the proposed location might let investigators ask whether damage matched the suggested event; an absent surface cannot answer that same question negatively. This does not favour the French-hit idea. It means the opportunity for that particular comparison has been lost. Confusing an unavailable test with a failed test would make the hypothesis seem disproved; confusing it with a successful test would make it seem confirmed. Neither follows from missing wood.
The two explanations are not necessarily mirror images. One starts from a survivor's reported water entry; the other proposes an initiating event through a reading of the battle's geography. They may address different parts of the loss, even where a complete reconstruction would eventually have to connect them. Listing them as two rival labels can therefore be misleading. Before weighing one against the other, we need to ask whether each describes the trigger, a contributing condition, or the mechanism by which the ship filled.
An unobserved possibility must still earn its place in the discussion. Missing timber is not a licence to place any imagined event there. Fontana's proposed hit has an identifiable reasoning path through the engraving and mapped setting; that distinguishes it from an unsupported invention. Yet a reasoning path is not the same as physical confirmation. The appropriate description preserves both facts at once: there is an argument to examine, and the relevant surviving archaeological surface cannot complete the proposed test.
Nor should a convincing explanation require that we assign blame. Wind, openings, movement and loading can be discussed as conditions without inventing what an officer intended or what a crew understood. The evidence considered here does not settle an individual's responsibility. Turning a gap into a character judgment would create apparent narrative closure at the expense of the people involved. The uncertainty belongs to the reconstructed sequence, not to an invitation to supply an unrecorded mistake by a named person.
A missing section also affects how strongly we should use the parts that remain. Surviving timber does not stand in for adjacent timber that eroded, just as a preserved paragraph cannot silently replace a lost page. The analogy is limited, but it helps explain the problem: evidence is not evenly distributed simply because it belongs to the same object. An impressive quantity of material can coexist with a small, decisive gap. For this proposed hit, the location of what is absent matters more than the sheer amount recovered.
This is not an argument that archaeology has failed. It is an argument for letting a particular archaeological question retain its real answer: the needed surface is unavailable. Much else can still be learned from the ship without turning every discovery into a verdict on the capsize. The distinction protects the achievements of excavation from an impossible demand. Recovering a substantial part of a Tudor vessel is not the same task as recovering a complete sequence of motions from a few minutes in 1545.
Spithead, 1982, and the Hull That Was Raised
Historic England's protected wreck entry locates Mary Rose at Spithead off Portsmouth. It records that a large surviving hull section was raised in 1982, after about 800 timbers had been removed before lifting. Part of the stem post and an anchor followed in 2005. The entry also records earlier salvage and modern excavation. These are substantial recoveries, but they describe a surviving section and a worked archaeological site, rather than a complete ship held in the state of its final moments on the seabed.
The physical display can encourage a misleading sense of completeness. A visitor sees an enormous surviving structure, whereas the missing material is less immediately legible. The imagination readily supplies the other half and turns the result into a whole ship. That mental reconstruction may help someone understand the vessel's scale, but it should not be mistaken for recovered evidence. For the question of a proposed impact, the absent portion has to remain absent even when a drawing, model or illustration makes the ship look complete.
Recovery also gives the ship more than one history to read. There is the history of the vessel before its loss, and the history of what happened to its remains afterward. RMG describes preservation in Solent mud, earlier salvage efforts and rediscovery in 1971. Those processes help explain why there is anything to investigate, while also reminding us that the surviving assemblage did not arrive untouched from one instant. Material can be remarkably preserved without preserving every relationship required to reconstruct a particular event.
The Mary Rose Trust and Royal Museums Greenwich provide different modern accounts of the sinking; Fontana proposes a geographical interpretation, while Historic England describes the protected wreck and its recovery. Here their claims have been kept distinct rather than merged into an imagined eyewitness scene. Some conclusions concern the survival of wood, others the interpretation of words or pictures. Readers comparing the accounts should keep that difference visible, especially when a short explanation moves from a reported observation to a confident statement of cause.
The recovered Mary Rose can show us timber that outlasted centuries under water, but she cannot offer the missing port-side surface for inspection. An anchor and part of the stem post were raised as late as 2005, a reminder that the famous 1982 lift was not the end of the ship's material history. More of the vessel could be recovered without restoring the one erased surface on which this particular argument depends.
