Signals & Codes
A puzzling signal needs more than a memorable description. This shelf brings together ciphers, broadcasts, sounds, and measured phenomena. It distinguishes a recorded observation from an explanation of its source.
How to read this shelf
- Ask what was actually recorded: a text, waveform, photograph, instrument reading, or later recollection. The available record limits what can be tested.
- For a cipher, compare a proposed solution with the complete text and a repeatable method. A few recognizable words are not the same as a demonstrated decoding.
- For an unusual phenomenon, distinguish observation from cause. Look for independent measurements, instrument limits, and ordinary alternatives before treating an unexplained detail as extraordinary.
